Here’s a simplified step-by-step guide for applying floor epoxy:
1. Prepare the Floor
- Clean Thoroughly: Sweep, vacuum, and mop the floor to remove dirt, grease, and oil.
- Etch or Sand: Use a concrete etcher or lightly sand to roughen the surface for better epoxy adhesion. Rinse and let it dry completely.
- Repair Cracks: Fill any cracks or holes with concrete filler and let it cure.
2. Mix the Epoxy
- Combine Parts: Epoxy comes in two parts – resin and hardener(A and B). Mix them as per instructions, typically in a large bucket. If you are adding color, metallic color or glitter add it in the large bucket while mixing the epoxy.
- Stir Well: Use a paint stirrer or drill attachment to mix thoroughly, as incomplete mixing can cause curing issues. Follow the "pot life" (working time) instructions, as epoxy hardens after a set period.
3. Apply the Epoxy
- Cut In Edges: Use a paintbrush to apply epoxy along the edges and corners of the floor first.
- Roll on the Epoxy: Use a roller with an extension pole to spread the epoxy in sections. Work in small 4x4 foot areas to ensure even coverage.
- Optional Color Chips: If adding decorative chips, sprinkle them by hand onto the wet epoxy immediately after application.
4. Let It Cure
- Allow the epoxy to dry for the recommended time (usually 24-48 hours) before walking on it and 72 hours before placing heavy items.
Tips:
- Make sure the room is well-ventilated.
- Wear gloves and a mask to avoid exposure to fumes.
And that’s it! Following these steps will give you a durable, glossy epoxy floor finish.
